knotty dollies

excepting miss mal doesn't like it when i call them naughty. sleep dollies are what we usually call them now. very easy to make, got the pattern from the book, nature babies, which came from my library (once i realized that you could get craft books from the library, there was no stopping me. i requested amy butler's little stitches, the anna maria horner book, and the sock and glove animal book. yeah for taxes.)

in case you couldn't tell from the pictures, all four limbs have knots on the ends.

I yelled at a pickle because I'm NOT crazy.

a word game to pass the time. details here.
that was mallory's. mine was I ran over a fireman because I'm cool like that.

isaac's: I danced with a banana because I'm sexy and I do what I want.
doug's: I danced with my science teacher because that's how I roll.

periodic table

picture of miss mal when she was a baby. the periodic table is still up, but now she is in a twin bed. i'll let you know in 20 years if she is a chemistry genius.

oh and this picture was taken with our old film camera. and the film waited around for awhile to be developed. makes me oh so thankful for digital cameras.

a quote for today

My aunt posted this on her blog today.

"I would be most content if my children grew up to
be the kind of people who think decorating consists
mostly of building enough bookshelves." ~Anna Quindlen

i rather enjoyed it.

CHANGE

i voted. but i must say, for two candidates who are saying they are for change, they missed. i mean, how long are we going to be repressed under an ancient system of measurement? i was cooking the other day, and i couldn't remember how many teaspoons were in a tablespoon (3) or how many tablespoons were in a cup (16). when i worked in a lab, i was surprised how easy the metric system was to work with...

anyway, until a candidate supports switching over the metric system, that's when i will put their bumper sticker on my car. or a sign on my lawn.

p.s. here is a great site for easy conversions. but if we had the metric system, you could do it in your head.

cyclops bear and kitty

these were going to be similar to the sarcastical bear...i think i really should work on making a pattern instead of winging it.

the green one is the bear in case you were wondering. the pink one was supposed to be a bear as well, but is now a kitty.

i don't know why they only got one eye. probably b/c i really didn't figure in my seam allowances very well. especially around the neck.

flower shirt

another flower shirt. made this one for cousin Lindsey. sadly only took a picture when it was dark. again used yard sale find of quilt flowers and appliqued it to the t-shirt. i like what the lady who made the flowers did-- she sewed them to iron on interfacing and cut a hole in the interfacing to turn them inside out. so i was able to iron them on to applique them. very nice.

and mallory sporting her shirt (complete with pop stains) i made at a birthday party for isaac. yep he's one now. way too fast. that's cousin jehu on the left.

two interesting articles

hmmm....just realized that the last post was number 200. might just have to have a giveaway to celebrate.

anyway, i was reading microbiology bytes the other day and thought you other moms would be interested in this.

here is an article about breast fed babies' intestinal bacteria vs. bottle fed intestinal bacteria. very fascinating.

and an article about Staphylococcus and SIDS deaths (cot deaths).
also very interesting. sometime i will go into depth about why i felt comfortable putting isaac on his stomach to sleep when he was a wee baby. but basically i read into the studies that were done on SIDS deaths and drew my own conclusions.

curly hair isn't all it's cracked up to be.

another pregnancy ailment that caught me off guard, because i didn't notice it until a few months after birth. then i had all these short hairs poking out in the middle of nowhere. especially since it is curly and can't lay flat. arg. i might just shave off my hair. it's got to be easier.

cute. but i'm not the one giving it away. i am just trying to win. i have this belief that someday i will win something. hopefully it's the jackpot. you know, 25 million dollars? wouldn't that be great? oh yeah, actually playing the lottery would increase your chances, but dreaming of it is still fun.

cantaloupe

if you were a baby given a large piece of cantaloupe, where would you put it?

In the dishwasher's soap dispenser, of course!

how i get my daughter's hair done.

and she inheirited her thick, tangly, messy, curly hair from me. poor kid. but anyway, if i don't want to let my kid go around looking like white trash, i put her in the sink where she goes to town. which usually includes wiping her soapy hands all over the mirror.

fixed the bug

k, got the pictures to show up on the bug post. now if you know what it is, let me know? thanks.

oh and i tried this recipe yesterday with some squash and tomatoes from our garden. very good. 5 stars.

some fruits of our garden.

mmm....i think my favorite thing in the whole world is a home grown tomato (even more than chips and salsa. i know, it surprises me, too). leaves store bought tomatoes in the dust. even when they have an ugly crack in them.

and i learned another new thing from my dad this year. i guess if you plant zucchini and squash by each other, they cross pollinate. so my zucchini has been a little yellower than normal, and my squash is a little greener than normal. ain't genetics fun? this makes me want to go back in time and watch Mendel.

bug.

i need to ask my entomology friend, or what's that bug, what this is. but it was perched outside our window for about 4 hours. must have had a good nap.
