home to some of the most beautiful sunsets. someday, when i have my dream home, i would love to have a unobstructive view of western horizon...someday

A Hunky Chunk

I heard that Michael Miller was having a baby bootie contest. and i thought perfect! now i won't have any more excuses not to make isaac some bigger shoes, since he outgrew the first batch. So, since the original pattern only goes to six months, i measured isaac's foot, added a half an inch for growth, and added an inch for seam allowance, and sort of guesstimated how the rest of the pattern would fit... i think that they will fit him for awhile (i hope...)

I wanted to make more shirts with the chemical element words since mallory outgrew hers, we added another member to our family, and i didn't do such a hot job applique-ing ours on. so i stared at the periodic table on my daughter's wall and found an applicable word for isaac. though i could have done "CHUNK" and it definitely would have fit him as well. (Doug looked at the wall and picked out "I CaNDy", but wouldn't let me make a shirt spelling that out for him sadly...)

I used my desktop printer to print directly onto fabric (i think i found the sheets of fabric at michael's)

mallory showing off her "CUTe" I've done cute two ways, one with copper: CuTe, and the other with carbon and uranium: CUTe. I think i like the copper one better, but i used the carbon and uranium so i could have more colors to match the fabric.

this picture wasn't the best, didn't think about sitting under leafy trees. and a certain miss mallory wanted to go play with her cousins instead of getting her picture taken. but better ones are coming...

oh by the way, mine says NErDy and doug's says GaSSY. both are very fitting.

why you should use filters before drinking water from a stream...

i haven't posted something nerdy in awhile, and thought i would share a picture from when i worked in a medical microbiology lab. This is Giardia lamblia and doesn't it have a friendly face? it was always fun when we found one in someone's stool sample. nice and obvious what it was...

addicted

i guess there are worse things to be addicted than making baby shoes...

i made these for the lady i made the gray hooter hider for (i gave in and used red thread) and since i accidentally made two left shoes, i made a pair for another lady in our ward who was going to have a baby boy...

Baked Chicken With Tarragon, Mustard and Pear

I got this from the newspaper and tried it. i thought it was the best chicken i have had in a long time. it was very tender. now i don't know if this is because i cooked it with pear or because i beat the crapola out of it with a rolling pin...

2 chicken breast halves (boneless and skinless, of course. i don't like being reminded of where my food comes from. though i would like a badge made out of this...)

2 med Anjou pears
2 T unsalted butter
1/2 - 3/4 t cayenne pepper (i actually liked it better without, and i like spicy things)
1 t dried tarragon
2 t balsamic vinegar
1 1/2 T Dijon-style mustard
salt
pepper

preheat oven to 375 degrees

place chicken in plastic wrap and pound to an even thickness of 1/2-3/4 inch.
peel, core, and slice the pears
melt butter in lg ovenproof skillet over med. heat
add cayenne pepper to taste, tarragon, balsamic vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper to taste
add chicken and quickly turn over so both sides are well coated.
remove from heat and arrange the pear slices around chicken
transfer to the oven and bake for about 15 min or just until chicken is cooked through.
serve hot

i like to serve it with cous cous.

doug liked the chicken, but really didn't like the pears. so they were all mine, baby. mallory and isaac loved the cous cous. it was all over the kitchen afterwards.

poor doug didn't have a good week with my cooking, after i made him this, the next day i made greek chicken and potatoes, which, besides the chicken and potatoes, didn't contain one ingredient that doug liked. but he said it tasted better than it smelled-- a compliment or not, i am still trying to figure out... then the day after that i made curry a little hotter than normal...the next day he said that he would make dinner. my evil plan is working...

glamour shots of a buttonshirt dress

i finally completed something off my to-do list. I took a shirt i found at a thrift shop and made it into dress for mallory. i got the idea and general instructions here. since the shirt i used had long sleeves, i just used the cuffs for the straps instead of making ruffly things. I thought it turned out cute and doug even said that it was pretty slick. so if you see a cute shirt at a thrift shop or yard sale...

oh yes, and it just so happened that the shirt matched a bow that aunt carma gave her...
